    There is a solenoid in your GM converter that causes the the torque convertor clutch (TCC) to engage and disengage. When the TCC solenoid receives a signal from the engine control module (ECM), it opens a passage in the valve body and hydraulic fluid applies the TCC. When the ECM signal stops, the solenoid closes the valve and pressure is vented, causing the TCC to disengage.

The transmission stays in direct drive even when the accelerator pedal is released, there is no freewheeling, RPM level is maintained and torque converter unlock is done with either pushing the momentary switch again or pressing the brake pedal.

The 2004.5-2007 48re in my truck was killed by the bad "Transmission throttle valve actuator" In other words the electronic shifter was shifting in and out of gear under load and smoked the bands and torque converter. This was a Mercedes Improvement, Is my understanding.
